Atomic wallet has been hacked

Wallets and Whales

From popular cryptowallet Atomic has been hacked. Several Twitter users report the total loss of their cryptocurrencies.

The popular software wallet "Atomic" has apparently become the target of a hacker attack. This was reported by the team behind the application on Twitter. They are "investigating and analyzing" the situation and will share new information as soon as it becomes available. It is still unclear how the security breach occurred.

Earlier, a number of Twitter users had reported that their cryptos had disappeared. One user reportedly suffered a loss of nearly US$8 million. As the pseudonymous on-chain analyst ZachXBT reports, the attackers captured a total of more than US$35 million.

In the wake of the news, the project's own coin, AWC, plummeted more than 10%. The Atomic Wallet registered a total of five million downloads. The team reports that less than 1% of monthly active users were affected by the hack. According to them, the last loss was reported more than 40 hours ago.

Atomic claims to be a secure crypto self-storage solution. In a rapport of February 2022 by audit firm Least Authority, however, claims that the app is "not sufficiently secure" in protecting its users' possessions and private data.

Atomic advises victims of the hack to contact company support at support@atomicwallet.io.

Software wallets such as Atomic do not represent the highest standard of security in the crypto sector. A hardware wallet is therefore recommended for storing large sums of money.
